Physical Acting and Stage Combat Workshop

June 22-28, 2008

This weeklong workshop at Frostburg State University will consist of group and individual instruction focusing on physical acting. It will include unarmed and single sword stage combat, however the focus will be on learning to use the entire body as an expressive instrument on stage. It is designed for the high school actor (ages 14-19) of all experience levels.

Students will enjoy daily warm-ups, classes in movement styles, including physical clowning, and Grotowski and LeCoq based exercises designed to allow young actors access to emotional depth in their work as well as unarmed stage combat and Hollywood style single sword. The week will culminate with a day where parents can attend and observe class as well as a performance (with feedback from the faculty) of selected scenes and work generated during the workshop. By the end of the week, the successful student will be able to:

  • use their entire body as an expressive instrument
  • demonstrate improved emotional and physical range
  • access greater depth of emotion in their acting work
  • "act" a fight
  • perform safe, choreographed routines
  • understand principles of safe stage fighting
  • understand when they need to seek the help of an expert.
