Welcome to Earth Science
FSU Earth Science Students field experience 2010
Earth Science is the study of how the Earth formed, how it evolved, how it works and how can we help best manage its resources to preserve its habitats.
Earth Scientists seek answers to questions such as: how did the planet form? How has it changed over time? What is the planet made of? Why do we have different landscapes? What conditions were necessary for life to begin? Why does climate change? What is the future of the Earth?
Earth Scientists apply interdisciplinary techniques to locate, identify and characterize natural processes, reconstruct landscapes and environments, and examine the impacts of climate change.
Earth Scientists develop land-use and environmental sustainability plans and policies and explore remote regions of the Earth as well as other planets and solar systems.
Why study Earth Science?
The study of the Earth has never been as important a concern for the world’s population as it currently is today. Natural resources, energy and climate change are almost daily topics in the media. Our need to understand and be able to explain natural phenomena in order to protect our society is of paramount importance. If earth systems fail, so will society.
Will I be employed?
The field of Earth Science is experiencing widespread growth due to an increased awareness of excessive global consumption and the declining availability of finite Earth materials (minerals, rocks, soils and water) and energy resources.
What we have to offer?
FSU’s bachelor’s degree in Earth Science addresses the need for baccalaureate educated Earth Scientists who wish to develop careers in both the academic and commercial sectors, locally and globally. The experiential teaching style we use during your academic career at FSU will help you develop skills necessary to be a competent Earth Scientist. Our degree will integrate geomorphology, physical geology, soils, survey, environmental reconstruction, field work, GIS, remote sensing and genuine original research.
