Study Abroad Home > Programs > Summer > Social Work in Limerick, Ireland Students in Social Work or in other human services disciplines will have an opportunity to spend four weeks in Limerick, Ireland, getting hands-on experience at various social services agencies in and around the city while earning three credits in social work, with the option of taking an additional course. Students live in the heart of one of Ireland's most progressive cities, with easy access to ancient sites of interest, the shopping areas, and the University of Limerick. Dates: Students will travel to Ireland from mid-June to mid-July or during the first summer session. Exact dates for 2007 have not yet been confirmed. Course Offerings: Students register at FSU, and an FSU, Salisbury University or Hood College faculty member accompanies the group to Ireland. All students will sign up for SOWK 490, 'Special Topics in Social Work.' During their time in Ireland they will take part in 100 hours of field experience in generalist social work practice and social work intervention. An optional course will also be offered, SOWK 498, 'Readings in Social Work.' Prerequisites: sophomore status and SOWK 370, or permission of instructor. Costs: The program fee ranges from approximately $2300 -2500, depending on in-state or out of state status. This price includes FSU tuition and fees, accommodation, most meals, airfare, the $150 study abroad administrative fee, and ISIC card. The fee does not include passport, additional travel, personal expenses or additional meals. Accommodation: Students are housed in a student hostel in the center of Limerick. Rooms range from singles with en suite bathrooms to dormitory style rooms. Most students opt for a single or double room with a shared bathroom. Meals may be cooked on site in the hostel kitchen, or taken at one of the hundreds of restaurants or pubs nearby. There is also a TV lounge in the hostel, and laundry facilities.
