Assessment is "the systematic collection of information about student learning, using the time, knowledge, expertise, and resources available, in order to inform decisions on how to improve learning.” (Walvoord, B. In its mission statement, Frostburg State University has committed to this concept of assessment as part of the teaching and learning process in its goal to “Develop a student learning assessment plan that sets forth realistic standards for good practices, systematically gathers data, and improves university programs and services.” Frostburg State University's Draft Strategic Plan further emphasizes the importance of assessment.

The Student Learning Assessment website provides guidance and support to academic departments and programs on assessment of student learning outcomes. These pages provide:

• Access to relevant documents and policies that provide part of the framework for FSU’s assessment efforts.
• Resources to support faculty in the development, implementation, and interpretation of student learning assessment in their disciplines.
• Updates on our successes in assessment and what we have learned as a result.
